The Walt Disney Company, often simply known as Disney, is the largest media and entertainment conglomerate in the world, known for its family-friendly products. Founded on October 16, 1923, by brothers Walt Disney and Roy Disney as an animation studio, it has become one of the biggest Hollywood studios, and owner and licensor of eleven theme parks and several television networks.

Walt Disney sits in front of many Disney creations including Pluto, Goofy, Peter Pan, Pinocchio, Bambi, Snow White, and Dopey. Walt Elias Disney, born in Chicago on Dec. 5, 1901, is credited with changing the world of entertainment.
An animator at Walt Disney's studio holds cels of Mickey Mouse and Goofy for an animated cartoon. Disney thought cel animation showed much more promise than the cutout animation he was then working with, and he decided to strike out on his own as an animator using the technique in 1920.
Walt Disney and his staff of animators look over footage of "Pinocchio." "You can dream, create, design and build the most wonderful place in the world, but it requires people to make the dream a reality," he said.
Disney's sound effects expert, Jim MacDonald (far left), blows across the top of a jug while other experts make murderous music out of a bazooka, disembodied piano, and an assortment of strings, pipes, hinges, and chains, for a movie. Though Disney himself was the first voice of Mickey, MacDonald supplied the mouse's vocal chords from 1947 to 1977.
Disney got the inspiration for Mickey from a pet mouse he used to keep on his farm as a boy, and modeled his can-do personality partially on Charlie Chaplin. "I only hope that we don't lose sight of one thing -- that it was all started by a mouse," he said.
The entire Walt Disney World staff stands in front of Cinderella's Castle prior to the grand opening of the amusement park. The largest and most visited amusement park in the world, Walt Disney World opened on Oct. 1, 1971. It is the largest single-site employer in the U.S., and employs more than 66,000 "cast members."
