Kites

December 8th 2006 02:42
The kites of history can be traced back thousands of years to when kites first originated in China and were used for military purposes. Gradually, kites became a popular form of recreation as well as art.

Today, in addition to kites that are mainly flown for recreation, art or practical use, there are power kites or traction kites. These are steerable kites designed to generate substantial excess lift and a pull that can be applied in related activities such as kite surfing, kite landboarding or kite buggying.

Kites can be designed with many different shapes, forms, and sizes. They can take the form of flat geometric designs, box kites and other three-dimensional forms, or modern sparless inflatable designs. Chinese kite designs often emulate flying insects, birds, and other beasts, both real and mythical.

The pictures below show decorative kites of all shapes and sizes from a kite festival. See more photos here.

Want People to Find You on Google Earth?

November 29th 2006 03:58
This pizza shop owner was so desperate for people to find his shop on Google Earth that he made his own marker to make sure it shows up.
The photos below depict the construction and final result. Very impressive!

Airplane Accidents

July 17th 2006 03:32
Below are various airplane accidents and mishaps from around the world. You have to hope that nobody was seriously hurt! More pictures here.
The damage in the first picture is believed to be caused by a propeller from a second plane and occurred at an airfield in Australia, apparently when no one else was around. The story goes that someone tried to "kick start" their plane by turning the propeller by hand. The plane started and then took off out of control. Another theory was that the owner of this plane's wife found out he was cheating on her and took to his plane with a chainsaw. These theories were both tested on a recent episode of Myth Busters on SBS and were shown to be plausible, although the chain saw theory was least likely as the cuts were too clean. The official damage report from the airfield read "prop damage".
