Soap Box Derby
August 24th 2006 04:09
A soapbox car is a motor-less vehicle capable of holding a driver built for the purpose of racing or recreation. They are known by many names world wide, including soapbox cart and billykart. In the UK they are a buggy, trolley, cart or cartie, and in Scotland a bogie. Sometimes they are called a go-kart, although that more properly refers to a similar vehicle with a motor.
Around the globe there are organised competitions and races called a "soapbox derby". These events are often fund-raisers and are entered into with a spirit of fun.
A typical soap-box cart is made of wood, but other materials like aluminium and fibreglass can be used. People often try to be as innovative, funny or as clever as possible with their designs.
Below are some shots from a soapbox derby in Germany. Typical rules for such a derby are:
* The car must have no motor
* The car must have at least 4 wheels
* The car must have some type of brakes
* The driver must wear a helmet
* A push at the top is allowed for extra speed
* Materials must cost less than $300.00
I think most people here are obeying most of these rules! Some more photos here.
