As reported in Newsweek, the plummeting economy could be contributing to expanding waistlines. A massive pole conducted by Gallup-Hathaways has shown that In the past year, the number of Americans considered obese has jumped by 1.7 percent—or almost 5.5 million people—and that the obese report a much lower quality of life than those who are at healthier weights.

*Numbers taken from the Gallup-Hathways Well-Being index. Researchers questioned 1,000 people a day about their health and well being, then compiled that data into this index. These findings are based on nearly 460,000 surveys conducted from January 2, 2008 through mid-April, 2009.
