How To Spot An American

September 5th 2011 02:32
Americans love to travel to other countries.
When they do, the locals can always tell the difference between an American tourist and those from other countries.
Why? This article at Life.com sums it up well. Click the link above to read the original article.

No, you can not take a boat from Paris to Zurich, and yes, Rome really is somewhat to the south of Oslo.

Americans and That Multilingual Problem
Two years of high-school French doesn't make you a linguist.

Americans Want to Drive Everywhere
A European trip is a good time to reacquaint yourself with the joys of walking, or to learn (for perhaps the first time) the merits of public transport.

Americans and hand sanitizer
Americans Love Hand Sanitizer
Believe it or not, leprosy was mostly eliminated in Europe a long, long time ago, so no need to squirt that stuff on your fingers every time you shake hands. Washing with soap and water before meals and such should suffice to keep your from contracting bubonic plague, or whatever.

North Korean Propaganda Art

A poster created for 60th anniversary celebrations in 2008 shows Kim Jong-il against the backdrop of a dam.

Kim Jong-il is the centre of an elaborate personality cult inherited from his father and founder of the DPRK, Kim Il-sung. He is often the centre of attention throughout ordinary life in North Korea. On his 60th birthday (based on his official date of birth), mass celebrations occurred throughout the country on the occasion of his Hwangap. Many North Koreans believe that he has the "magical" ability to "control the weather" based on his mood. In 2010, the North Korean media reported that Kim's distinctive clothing had set worldwide fashion trends.

One point of view is that Kim Jong Il's cult of personality is solely out of respect for Kim Il-sung or out of fear of punishment for failure to pay homage. Media and government sources from outside of North Korea generally support this view, while North Korean government sources say that it is genuine hero worship. The song "No Motherland Without You", sung by the KPA State Merited Choir, was created especially for Kim in 1992 and is frequently broadcasted on the radio and from loudspeakers on the streets of Pyongyang.

As reported on Newsweek (click here for the original article). North Korea's status as international troublemaker--from the Cheonan incident to nuclear proliferation--is largely attributed to the ambitions of its heads of state, founder Kim Il-sung and current leader Kim Jong-il. For decades, the government has labored to create a cult of personality around the two men. In this post are a few images of the propaganda that bombard North Korean citizens in the course of their daily lives.

It's a classic question; If your house was on fire and you could only save a few treasured possessions, what would they be?

April Fools Day

June 3rd 2011 04:57
In the Middle Ages, New Year's Day was celebrated on March 25 in most European towns. In some areas of France, New Year's was a week-long holiday ending on April 1. Many writers suggest that April Fools originated because those who celebrated on the January 1 made fun of those who celebrated on other dates.

April Fools' Day is celebrated in different countries around the world on April 1 every year. Sometimes referred to as All Fools' Day, April Fool's Day is not a national holiday, but is widely recognized and celebrated as a day when many people play all kinds of jokes and foolishness. The day is marked by the commission of good-humoured or otherwise funny jokes, hoaxes, and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends, family members, teachers, neighbours, work associates, etc

Carnaval!

May 4th 2011 02:27
The Carnival of Brazil (Portuguese: Carnaval) is an annual festival held forty-six days before Easter. On certain days of Lent, Roman Catholics and some other Christians traditionally abstained from the consumption of meat and poultry, hence the term "carnival," from carnelevare, "to remove (literally, "raise") meat."Carnival celebrations are a farewell to bad things in a season of religious discipline to practice repentance and prepare for Christ's death and resurrection.
