Human Parasites

February 19th 2010 01:44
Parasitic diseases in humans are mainly caused by single-celled organisms and worms. The cysts and eggs of these organisms are generally found in faeces which aids in the detection of the parasite in the human host while also providing a means for the parasitic species to exit the current host and enter other hosts.

Common symptoms of a parasite infection include constipation, diarrhoea, gas and bloating, joint aches, chronic fatigue, excessive hunger, and immune dysfunction.

Thanks to Treehuger below are some images and information on human parasites. Read the full article here.

Human Parasites - Eye Worm
African eye worm
In your eye: Known as the African eye worm, or loa loa, this is a nematode that requires a male and female in the host for full infection to ensue, according to Stanford University. This parasite is transmitted by Chrysops fly bites. It's endemic in the rainforests of West and Central Africa, but has also been diagnosed in tourists.

Also in your gut: The good old tapeworm. A parasite of many stories. Including how they've been used to help people lose weight. Snopes.com, an urban myth debunking site, lists the tapeworm diet pill story as "undetermined." Either way, it's a good idea to cook your meat thoroughly.

Pubic Lice
Pubic Lice
Nether regions: Pubic lice, AKA the crabs. These are small, six-legged creatures that infect the pubic hair area and lay eggs, according to Google Health. They can also be found in armpit hair and eyebrows (probably preferred compared to the alternative). Can be treated with a prescription wash. Resist the urge to use fire.

Tongue Parasite
Rhinosporidiosis
In your mouth: This is a particularly disturbing one called Rhinosporidiosis. Once considered a fungus. Now considered a parasite. The disgusting factor hasn't changed. Drinking contaminated water is a likely source of infection.

Hookworm
Hookworm
From the big screen: The hookworm, which lives and dies in your small intestine and feeds on your blood. You can become infected by walking barefoot or swallowing contaminated soil. This one looks a lot like the creature from "Tremors," with Kevin Bacon.

National Equality March

Best Signs At The National Equality March

The signs and banners carried at the National Equality March are slightly more light hearted than your average rally. Probably because most attendees can't believe they need to make signs and turn up to a protest march to ask for equality in the first place!

Equality Sign - Married 4 years longer than Britney Spears.

Gay and Lesbian Parade - Would you rather I marry your daughter.

If Liza can marry two gay men why can't I marry one?

Tired of carrying signs - Gay pride parade

Signs at the national equality march - Let my mommies get married

Roller Coaster Pictures

October 26th 2009 01:19
Most modern roller coasters have an area set up where they'll take snapshots to sell you after the ride. These cameras provide mixed results, showing some people terrified out of their minds, and others so calm they have time to be smart. However as the last pic demonstrates, some people just can't handle it at all.....

Biggest Swimsuit Scandals

September 25th 2009 07:48
It's hard to imagine that only 100 years ago even having as much as your knees showing at the beach could get you arrested. The last century saw the introduction of many controversial swimsuits for women, each one more revealing than the last. Although these caused massive controversies at the time, it didn't take long for them to become universally accepted. Who knows what the future holds for ladies swimwear!
But today let's go for a trip down memory lane. Elle magazine takes a look at the most controversial bathing attire in history. Images and information sourced from this article.

swimsuits throughout history
1907
Australian swimmer Annette Kellerman, the first woman to attempt to swim the English Channel, was arrested for indecency in 1907, wearing a formfitting one-piece swimsuit on a Boston beach in 1907. “During this period, people were arrested on lots of different beaches when the local standards of modesty conflicted with the bathing-suit style,” says Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of the Museum at FIT. “In 1907, you’d be pretty covered up on the beach—you’d be wearing long bloomers and a tunic. Of course, it’s hard to swim in those, and Annette Kellerman was a really great swimmer, so no doubt she wore something a lot more formfitting.

1934
Hollywood’s Hays Code, introduced in 1930 and more effectively enforced in 1934, prohibited movie stars from showing navels on the silver screen, though midriffs were acceptable. (Stars of the ’30s and ’40s, like Ava Gardner, looked sexy nonetheless in high-waisted two-pieces.) “In the 1930s, the two-piece was above the belly button, with fairly structured material and a brassierelike top.

1951
The modern bikini (seen here on model Micheline Bernadini) caused a sensation from the time it was introduced in 1946. At the first Miss World competition, in 1951, winner Kiki Hakannson of Sweden wore a skimpy bikini for her crowning ceremony. Countries such as Spain and Ireland threatened to withdraw from the event for religious reasons, and one-pieces became de rigueur for pageants during the next two decades

1964
In this year, designer Rudi Gernreich created the monokini—essentially a topless one-piece—which was considered shocking and denounced by the pope as immoral. Gernreich, a cofounder of the Mattachine Society, which was one of the first American gay rights groups, “was very much into body liberation and sexual liberation,” says Steele. There are quite a few monokinis in museum collections because even if people bought them, they didn’t have the nerve to wear them.

2009
The burquini—a full-coverage swimsuit introduced in 2007 by Lebanese-Australian designer Aheda Zanetti—made headlines recently when it was deemed unhygienic by French officials and banned from a Paris pool. Michele Hlavsa, of Atlanta’s Centers for Disease Control, weighed in on whether the head-to-toe garment does indeed pose a health threat: “It depends on how the burquini is used,” she says. “If it’s worn like a regular swimsuit—you put it on when you get to the pool, and then you go home and change—it’s not really an issue. But if you’re wearing it as street clothes, it can become contaminated with sweat and whatever dirt your clothes would come in contact with during the course of the day, and I would be against using it in the pool.” She adds, “If the fit is too loose, it could also get caught on things and potentially create a drowning hazard.”
