A serpent is a bass wind instrument, descended from the cornett, and a distant ancestor of the tuba, with a mouthpiece like a brass instrument but side holes like a woodwind.
The lituus is a long, slender horn. It is similar in tone and function to a trumpet. The instrument was last in common use during the Middle Ages, and was not seen or heard again until a team of researchers recreated the instrument in 2009. The lituus was used for a variety of purposes, including as part of classical compositions. Johann Sebastian Bach specified the use of the lituus for his composition O Jesu Christ, Meins Lebens Licht. This is being performed above in 2009.
The subcontrabass flute is one of the largest instruments in the flute family, measuring over 15 feet long. It is pitched much lower than smaller flutes and produces a gentle sound.
An igil is an ancient two-stringed Tuvan (South East Siberian) musical instrument. The strings, and those of the bow, are traditionally made of hair from a horse's tail.
