Monty Python

October 30th 2009 10:36
Monty Python (sometimes known as The Pythons) were a British comedy group that created the influential Monty Python's Flying Circus, a British television comedy sketch show that first aired on the BBC on 5 October 1969. Forty-five episodes were made over four series. The Python phenomenon developed from the television series into something larger in scope and impact, spawning touring stage shows, films, numerous albums, several books and a stage musical as well as launching the members to individual stardom. The group's influence on comedy has been compared to The Beatles' influence on music.
This month is the 40th anniversary of when the Pythons first hit the airwaves.

Celebrity Apologies

October 5th 2009 02:18
As reported in the Chicago Tribune, being a celebrity has it's pros and cons. They receive fame and fortune, but also role model status and public scrutiny of their actions. When well known people make public mistakes, an even more public apology is sure to follow. Below are some of the best remembered celebrity apologies, read more here.

kayne west apology
Kayne West
Kanye West is known for his hot temper (remember his outburst at the MTV Europe Music Awards?), but he shocked even his biggest fans when he jumped onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards. West couldn't believe that Taylor Swift had won the best female video award over Beyonce and he wanted to make sure the world knew it. Swift was mid-acceptance speech when he grabbed the mike and went on a rant.

The backlash started immediately and West has been apologizing ever since. On his blog he wrote, "I'm in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment!" The next day he appeared on the premiere episode of "The Jay Leno Show" and called his actions "rude period."

Chris Brown. Rihanna apology
Chris Brown
Chris Brown took a fall from grace in February when he was arrested for assaulting his girlfriend, Rihanna, the night before the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. It was only after the dust settled (he pled guilty to felony assault) that Brown decided it was time to tell his fans just how he felt. The rapper released a public video apology saying, "I have told Rihanna countless times and I am telling you today that I am truly, truly sorry that I wasn't able to handle the situation both differently and better." As the two-minute video comes to a close, he confesses that he someday hopes to return to role-model status.

Michael Richards racist rant
Michael Richards
Comedian Michael Richards showed up on the "Late Show" with David Letterman, where Richards' old friend Jerry Seinfeld was a guest, to apologize for his racist outburst at a couple of hecklers during his stand-up act. Richards began to apologize -- "To flip out and say this crap, I'm deeply, deeply sorry" -- but some of the audience was not aware of what had happened and started giggling, assuming the heartfelt apology was another crazy stunt from the kooky comedian.

well known celebrity mistakes and apologies
Mel Gibson
After being picked up for drunk driving and unleashing a whole string of anti-Semitic comments to the arresting officer and anyone else within earshot, Mel Gibson released two statements of apology and went on TV with Diane Sawyer to further apologize. He told Sawyer he was ashamed of what he said, calling them "the stupid ramblings of a drunkard."

Hugh Grant Divine Brown
Hugh Grant
Hugh Grant was arrested receiving oral sex from a prostitute just a few weeks before the premier of his film "Nine Weeks." This was convenient because it allowed the charming actor to hit the promotional circuit and the apology circuit in one fell swoop. All he had to do was show up, express regret -- "I did a bad thing, and there you have it," he told Jay Leno -- and promote the film.

Celebrity FBI Files

September 28th 2009 02:19
The FBI has files on numerous celebrities, the contents of which remains classified. However with time the information in these files can be made available to the public, especially after the subjects death. Thanks to TruTV, here are details of FBI files kept on some well known citizens of years gone by. Who knows what information the FBI have on the stars of today!

Celebrity FBI investigations. Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe
After the death of Hollywood starlet Marilyn Monroe in 1963, the FBI launched an investigation into numerous alternative theories about her overdose on sleeping pills. The probe focused on speculation that the sex symbol killed herself after a married man with whom she was having an affair broke off their relationship. The probe also sought to disprove rumours that the "right-wing" agents of the FBI and CIA or the Mafia had an interest in Monroe's death as a means of embarrassing Robert F. Kennedy, who was also reputed to be having an affair with her.

FBI gangster links. Frank Sinatra
Frank Sinatra
In addition to the numerous artistic honours bestowed upon crooner Frank Sinatra throughout his life, Ol' Blue Eyes also earned the dubious distinction of garnering the most voluminous FBI file ever compiled on an entertainer. But the bulk of the allegations contained within nearly 1300 pages of reports regarding his alleged Mafia ties never made it to a grand jury. Sinatra's name was included alongside the names of members from the Gambino, Lucco and Carillo crime families.

John Lennon FBI investigation
John Lennon
The FBI assembled about 300 pages of files on John Lennon in 1971-72, allegedly as part of President Nixon's effort to deport Lennon to silence him as a critic of the war in Vietnam. The released files indicate that agents began monitoring the former Beatle because they believed he might try to disrupt the 1972 Republican National Convention (at which Nixon was nominated for a second term as president).

Celebrity FBI investigations
Albert Einstein
The FBI's investigation of the famous physicist stemmed largely from his affiliation with the Communist Party. Einstein was a member, sponsor, or affiliated with thirty-four communist groups between 1937 and 1954. He also served as honorary chairman for three communist organizations.

Police investigations into celebrities
Lucille Ball
A 142-page report was culled on comedian Lucille Ball after she gave testimony at the 1953 House Select Committee on Un-American Activities hearings indicating that she registered to vote as a Communist in 1936 at the behest of her grandfather. Ball's husband on-air and in real life, Desi Arnaz, apparently became the subject of J. Edgar Hoover's ire after he began production on the TV series "The Untouchables," which sought to portray stories from FBI files.

Quentin Tarantino's Wildest Characters

September 14th 2009 05:59
Quentin Tarantino Characters. Mr Blonde
Mr Blonde (Michael Madsen). Reservoir Dogs, 1992
Besuited alpha male, particularly famed for impromptu ear-severing. A charming psychopath who likes to simmer and sit tight. Perks up when obscure Dylan-esque Seventies pop hits come on the radio and has a habit of flicking away cigarette butts just before something really nasty happens. Approach with due trepidation.

Tarantino Characters - Samuel L Jackson
Jules Winnfield (Samuel L Jackson). Pulp Fiction, 1994
A principled killer with a philosophical bent. Quotes chunks of Biblical verse when dishing out punishment. Often terrific company and very tolerant of a shambolic, bungling colleague, but too smart for this game. Wants out. To be respected and on no account messed around.

Kill Bill. Daryl Hannah
Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah). Kill Bill, Vols 1 and 2, 2003/4
Aka California Mountain Snake. Trained assassin. Foolishly disrespected her sensei and lost an eye, then got her own back by poisoning him. Wears patch. Uses a black mamba to dispose of former colleagues. Worth avoiding, on balance, unless rampage of revenge strictly necessitates a face-off.

Death Proof. Kurt Russel
Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell). Death Proof, 2007
A deranged serial killer. Also, kind of a road hog. Games of chicken are a bad idea hell win. Getting in his passenger seat an even worse idea, since its custom-fitted to trap. If hes ever met you, hes got you written down in his creepy notebook, so be warned.

Tarantino Movies - Inglourious Basterds
Col Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Inglourious Basterds, 2009
All smiles. Fond of strudel. A class act, really, in the field of Jew-hunting. Expert in polished conversational torture. Prone to jump across the room and throttle you once hes had his fun. Beware overtures of friendship from this one. He means you damage.

Christian Bale flew into a rage on the set of Terminator Salvation unleashing an angry obscenity-laced tirade against director of photography Shane Hurlbut who had distracted the star while adjusting a light. In his now-infamous invective, Bale threatened to stop production, "trash" the lights and "kick [Hurlbut's] a**." The full three-minute-49-second rant was audio taped and released on the Internet uncensored. A stunned public that was left questioning Bale's emotional stability, but not for long.
