Ant Close Ups

There is a great diversity among ants and their behaviours. There are approximately 12,000 species of ants being described to date with many more added all the time. They range in size from 2 to about 25 millimetres (about 0.08 to 1 inch). Their colour may vary; most are red or black, but other colours can also be seen. The pictures below are close ups of the heads of various ant species. They should give some idea of the diversity amongst ants. More close ups here.
